Hyundai Tucson vs Mazda CX-50
2024 Mazda CX50 Joins CX5 in Challenging the Hyundai Tucson
With such a similar size, how are the Mazda CX-5 and CX-50 different? Is one bigger than the Tucson? Let’s take a look.
2024 Mazda CX-5 vs CX-50
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 and 2024 Mazda CX-50 share the compact SUV slot in the Mazda lineup. They play different roles, according to the brand, and rumors swirl around whether the CX-5 will be phased out. Both offer today’s high tech equipment and ample power. They each have many trim levels, but amenities and tech tools are differently packaged to appeal to different demographics.
However, one of the biggest complaints against the CX-5 is that it doesn’t have enough passenger and cargo space. So it is surprising that the CX-50 doesn’t fix the problem. In fact, the newer SUV model only adds two cubes of passenger space, and somehow it has a tiny fraction less rear headroom, where it counts the most.
Critics have noted that Mazda puts style considerations ahead of space. Indeed the CX-5 has its own distinct style, and now the CX-50 has been created with a distinct style all its own. Furthermore, the 2024 Mazda CX-50 is decidedly more rugged. It has higher ground clearance and more available equipment for those who like to do some light off-roading.

Tucson vs Mazda CX-50, CX-5
Ranked in size, the Tucson has the largest cabin with 8 cubes of space more than the 2024 Mazda CX-50 and 10 cubes more than the 2024 Mazda CX-5.
All three SUVS have reclining second row seats. However, the Tucson has more second-row headroom and legroom, assuring comfort. Furthermore, the 2024 CX-50 has new sculpted outboard seats which offer comfort, but this leaves the middle seat less hospitable to an adult passenger.
The 2024 CX-5 and 2024 CX-50 have a large 12-inch display. Menus and choices are made with a rotary controller. However, the display does act as a touchscreen when using Android Auto or Apple Carplay.
The Tucson starts off with an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Upgrades include a 12-inch touchscreen and an equally large digital instrument panel. The 2025 Hyundai Tucson will introduce an even more advanced panoramic display.
Hyundai and Mazda include their entire suite of crash avoidance features, including adaptive cruise control. The Hyundai Tucson has earned 2024 Top Safety Pick in a year where the IIHS has made it harder to achieve the award. This is due in part to their new equipment, which includes rear side airbags, rear seatbelt notification, and rear seatbelt enhancements.
US News and World Report gave this Hyundai SUV two awards that demonstrate how it stands up to its Mazda CX-5 and Mazda CX-50 rivals. The Tucson is the 2024 Best Compact SUV for the Money and the 2024 Best Compact SUV for Families.

It saves some $1,800 over the CX-5 and $2,800 over the CX-50. Tucson AWD prices start out at $29,000 MSRP, still undercutting the Mazda CX-5 by $300 and CX50 by $1300.
Trim levels include the SE, SEL, XRT, and Limited. Tucson FWD prices top off at $36,760 MSRP, and Tucson AWD prices top off at $38,260 MSRP. For more information about the Hyundai trim levels, check out this new Tucson review.
Costing about $1,000 less than the new Mazda CX-50, the 2.5 S Select CX-5 price is $29,300 MSRP. The S Select, S Preferred, Carbon Edition, and Premium are offered with the standard engine. On this trim ladder, the S Premium Plus CX-5 price is $36,500.

Higher Horsepower Comparison with Hyundai, Mazda Prices & Trim Levels
At $32,575, the Tucson Hybrid price is an incredible bargain. Plus this Blue trim offers the lowest ownership costs of any in this comparison. The powerful hybrid system generates 226 horsepower, just one horse shy of the Mazda. Fuel economy is 37 or 38 mpg combined.
You can also choose the Tucson Hybrid SEL Convenience or sporty N-Line Hybrid trim levels, and you still won’t pay as much as you would for the Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo.
For higher horsepower, the Carbon Turbo Mazda CX-5 price is $37,000, or you can step up to the CX-5 Turbo Premium. The CX-50 Turbo price starts at $38,000. Higher trims include the Turbo Meridian and Turbo Premium.
However, it’s important to be aware of two facts. First, turbo fuel economy drops even lower, increasing operating costs. Second, regular fuel produces 227 horsepower. To enjoy the top 256 horsepower, you have to pay steeper prices for high octane fuel.
The Tucson Hybrid Limited price starts at $39,715. It keeps operating costs low while undercutting the CX-50 Turbo Meridian, Premium and Premium Plus models. The top CX-5 price is $40,600 for the Turbo Signature. The top CX-50 price is $43,300 for the Turbo Premium Plus.
The 2024 Tucson PHEV is one of the few hybrid SUVs that is large, fuel efficient, and powerful. Plus it has 33 miles of electric range.
