2024 Hyundai Nexo Review

Nexo models are for sale in California only. This is due to the available hydrogen stations in California metro areas. Unfortunately, these stations just aren’t in place nationwide.

As such, Arizona Hyundai dealers aren’t selling the Nexo yet. We really like this interesting SUV and look forward to the day when we can make it available.

While we wait, our Hyundai dealership focuses on the wide range of green machines in our lineup. This includes the electric vehicles: Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Kona EV. Plus it includes hybrids such as the Sonata HEV, the Elantra HEV, the 3 row Santa Fe HEV, the Tucson HEV, and the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid.

The 2024 Hyundai Nexo is available in Blue and Limited trims. Nexo Blue models have a driving range of 380 miles. Nexo Limited trims have a driving range of 354 miles.

Nexo Blue models have leatherette upholstery in stone gray or meteor blue. Cabins have automatic climate controls and dual power seats. Dual screens include a 10.25-inch driver display and a 12.3-inch touchscreen display.

Many eco friendly materials are used for these models. This includes a rich Vegan leather upholstery and a variety of recycled materials.

Nexo Limited models have a premium audio system and dual ventilated seats. The cabin also has a heated steering wheel and power-heated seats. It’s easy to get into the cargo hold with the power liftgate.

Most similar in size to the Kona, Nexo cabins are rated at 101-cubic feet of passenger volume. Rear legroom is 38 inches -- about what you’ll find in the 2024 Hyundai Kona EV.

That legroom is five inches more than the Toyota Mirai which can only claim 33.1 inches of second-row legroom. It’s also more than the 35.2 inches in the Tesla Model 3.

As for the cargo hold, the Nexo is rated at 29.6 cubic feet. To put that in perspective, the Kona EV claims 25 cu ft, the Tesla 3 claims 15 cu ft, and the Toyota Mirai is rated for only 9.6 cu ft.

If you compare the Nexo to the 2024 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, you’ll find the hybrid has a bigger cabin overall. Rear legroom measures 41.3 inches. Cargo space measures 38 cubic feet.

The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a fully electric SUV. It has 106 cubic feet of passenger volume. Second row legroom measures 39.4 inches. The cargo hold is rated at 27 cubes.

As mentioned, the 2024 Nexo can drive either 354 or 380 miles after a single fill-up. Only the most expensive EVs can hope to compete with that. This long driving range is a big reason that Nexo models appeal to fleet buyers.

In comparison, the Hyundai Kona EV is rated at around 258 miles. The Ioniq models can achieve 280 or 300 miles of range.

Extremely capable, the Hyundai Nexo generates 291 lb-ft of torque, surpassing the Toyota Mirai and its 221 lb-ft. This powertrain is controlled by a special automatic transmission and electrically assisted steering.

Fuel economy is 65 mpge in the city, 58 mpge on the highway, and 61 mpge combined. Nexo Limited models can claim 59/57/57 mpge city-highway-combined. Currently for sale in Arizona, the Ioniq 5 can do even better. Its top fuel economy is 132/98 mge city/highway.

Compared to EVs, hydrogen fill-ups are fast. It takes only five minutes. For even the fast charging EVs, it may take 20 minutes or more to achieve a good charge.
